KANANASKIS, Alberta – French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that the 2026 G7 leaders summit will be held in Evian-les-Bains, a renowned Alpine spa resort near Lake Geneva. The high-level gathering is scheduled for June 14-16, 2026, marking France’s first time hosting the event since 2019.
France to Host 2026 G7 Summit in Evian, Macron Confirms
The announcement was made by Macron on Tuesday during the 2025 G7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada. Speaking to reporters, he emphasized France’s readiness: “Evian and its surrounding region have shown a real willingness and real commitment to hold this major international gathering.”
Evian, located in the French Alps and bordering Switzerland, last hosted the G7 in 2003. That summit became notable for Russia’s inclusion, transforming the group temporarily into the G8. However, Russia was expelled in 2014 following its annexation of Crimea. Reflecting on that decision, U.S. President Donald Trump remarked earlier this week, “It had been a big mistake to expel Russia,” revealing lingering divisions among G7 members.
Asked whether the summit could become a G6 due to Trump’s early departure from this year’s meeting, Macron replied: “I wouldn’t say it was an empty-chair policy. He was here, including for the most important debates. He missed only one session of the actual G7, and we spoke about all the subjects, including at dinner. I don’t think it would be fair or respectful to the Canadian presidency to say that.”
The G7 rotates its presidency annually among member countries — the United States, Canada, Japan, France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom — with the European Union also participating. After France in 2026, the U.S. is set to host the 2027 summit.
Known globally for its mineral water, Evian also carries historical diplomatic significance. It was the site of the 1962 Evian Accords, which brought an end to the Algerian War and led to Algeria’s independence from France.
This year’s summit focused heavily on geopolitical tensions, including ongoing support for Ukraine and rising instability in the Middle East, with Israel’s military operations against Iran dominating global headlines. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was among the invited participants.
Macron indicated that the 2026 event may feature updated formats and broader international engagement, reflecting evolving global challenges and priorities.
