Top News

COLOMBO: Jayasuriya five-for crushed Bangladesh’s resistance on the fourth morning as Sri Lanka sealed an innings and 78-run win in Colombo. The hosts needed only 28 minutes to remove the final four wickets and wrap up the series 1-0.

Jayasuriya five-for

Prabath Jayasuriya finished with 5 for 56, delivering his 12th five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Kusal Mendis, returning from a shoulder issue, supported him with two sharp dismissals behind the stumps.

Jayasuriya struck in his first over. Litton Das edged a forward defence, and Kusal grabbed the chance. In his next over, Jayasuriya deceived Nayeem Hasan with a dipping delivery. Nayeem lost balance and dragged his foot out. Kusal reacted instantly and broke the stumps.

“Jayasuriya completed his five-for pouching a return catch to his right,” noted the match report. Taijul Islam had tried to play across the line but got a leading edge.

Tharindu Ratnayake ended the innings one over later by trapping Ebadot Hossain LBW. Bangladesh lost their last four wickets in just 34 balls.

This was Sri Lanka’s ninth innings win over Bangladesh and brought vital World Test Championship points. Jayasuriya’s performance stood out, especially after he went wicketless in the first innings and had only one wicket in Galle.

Spin dominated again as Sri Lanka’s spinners claimed nine second-innings wickets. Tharindu and Dhananjaya de Silva supported Jayasuriya with two each.

The real damage came earlier in the game. Bangladesh’s sub-par 247 in the first innings and erratic bowling allowed Sri Lanka to post 458. Pathum Nissanka led the scoring with a composed 158.

Nissanka earned the Player of the Match and Player of the Series awards. He had also scored 187 in the first Test, making him the standout batter of the series.

Bangladesh struggled to recover after losing early control. Sri Lanka capitalised and never let them back in the contest.

Match Summary:

Sri Lanka 458 (Nissanka 158, Chandimal 93, Kusal 84, Taijul 5-131)
Bangladesh 247 & 133 (Mushfiqur 26, Jayasuriya 5-56)
Sri Lanka won by an innings and 78 runs
